BENTONVILLE — Bella Shtelman was born Sept. 1, 1939, in the Belorussian city of Minsk. She died Nov. 20, 1941, five months after the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union and occupied Minsk.

Seeing Suffering Leads To Action

I don’t like to admit it, but sometimes I just can’t bring myself to look. Often, when a commercial comes on with those big-eyed, sad, emaciated children’s faces, from Ethiopia or elsewhere, I simply turn away or change the channel.

Social action redeems fractured ‘sparks of light’

There is an ancient tradition that whenever a new synagogue is built, somewhere in the building, something is left undone. It could be a section of wall unpapered, a small piece of baseboard not painted or even an old tiny hole not filled in. This is to symbolically remind those who enter that our mission on earth is not yet finished, our restoration not quite completed.

Remembering the Holocaust

Nearly 30 years ago, Congress established the Days of Remembrance as our nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust. This year, it falls on April 11-18. Yom Hashoa (Hebrew for Holocaust Memorial Day) was observed in the U.S. on Sunday and in Israel on Monday.
