B'Nai Mitzvah Program

Congregation Etz Chaim provides Northwest Arkansas an open door where people of all backgrounds can feel at home to learn about and explore Jewish identity, spirituality, and culture; and effect change in our community.

CEC’s B’nai Mitzvah program consists of two school years of formal Jewish education in our B’Nai Mitzvah program, or its equivalent, so the student and their family can experience at least an annual cycle of Jewish holidays and lifecycle events.

Equivalency can be achieved through prior enrollment in another Religious School program for at least the year prior to Bar and Bat Mitzvah program; or individual tutoring at the family’s expense on the fundamentals of Judaism and Hebrew. CEC can recommend available tutors. Following a 3-4 week evaluation process of the student’s readiness by the rabbi, B’nai mitzvah tutor(s), B’nai Mitzvah teachers and/or Religious School director, you will be notified of an anticipated timeline for planning your family’s simcha.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to celebrate becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We know that not all students learn the same way, they do not have the same natural talents or abilities, and they come from very different life experiences. We are committed to working with every student, and to making this event a truly positive and enriching experience for every family.

Wednesday Class

The Wednesday class is devoted entirely to Hebrew studies. Students will continue in the Wednesday Hebrew program right up until the time of Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

The program has two components: (1) A combined fifth and sixth grade class and (2) a pre-b'nai mitzvah class.

Twelve months prior to a planned bar/bat mitzvah, students will move from the 5th/6th grade combined class to the pre-b'nai mitzvah class. (In addition to the Wednesday class, six months prior to a planned bar/bat mitzvah, students then begin individual preparation with the Rabbi. The schedule for these sessions are arranged individually with each family.)
